Independent Individualist
Living Free Now

"That one word—individualism—is to be the theme song, the goal, the only aim of all my writing. If I have any real mission in life—this is it."

—Ayn Rand
Holes, Cheese, and Heads
May 09, 2008

The Swiss, a few years ago, added a provision to their constitution that gives dignity to all living organisms using the term “Würde der Kreatur” (dignity of living beings) to apply to both plants and animals. To explain exactly what this means, the Swiss Federal Ethics Committee on Non-Human Biotechnology produced a report called "The Dignity of Living Beings with Regard to Plants."

Cocaine, Marihuana, and Milk
Still Think You're Free?
May 06, 2008

What do Cocaine, Marihuana, and Milk have in common? They are all controlled substances and if you sell them the government can put you in jail and confiscate your property.

Stupid European Multi-cultural Dhimmitude
May 05, 2008

"The Party for Freedom (PVV) will ask for an unscheduled debate to be held about a proposal put forward by Welfare State Secretary Jet Bussemaker for paying more attention to the role of Muslims in the liberation of the Netherlands during World War II."

Postmodernism At Work
Apr 29, 2008

Normally, I would not bother with such mindless statements, but they just happen to perfectly exemplify the post-modernist nonsense that is being taught in today's colleges and universities. It is why we are living in the age of gullibility. Do not suppose this is just ignorance, however. These things are being taught with a purpose. The idea is, if you convince people nothing is ever certain, proved, or absolute, you can then put over just anything and call it science.

In A World Of Lies, The Truth is Heresy
Global Warming Deniers
Apr 22, 2008

In case you have not seen it, Canada's National Post is carrying a marvelous series of article by real scientists exposing the lies of global climate change. There are 38 articles, so far.

Regi Predicts
Apr 21, 2008

Sometimes you don't want to be right. That's the case with the prediction I made just six days ago in my article, "Free to Eat? Maybe Not." While I was certain the prediction was correct, I did not expect it to happen so quickly.

The Psychology Scam
Apr 17, 2008

Today begins a series of articles on psychology and psychiatry by Lawrence Stevens. Psychology is one of three big lies that have universal unquestioned acceptance.

Free to Eat? Maybe Not
Apr 15, 2008

Just a week ago I was contemplating a small series of articles called, "Regi Predicts." I'm kicking myself for not starting it then, because my very first prediction was going to be that a shocking rise in food prices world-wide was immanent. This week, these are the headlines:

Is No One Free?
Apr 11, 2008

In "You and Harry Browne’s Book," I explained how you might be able to obtain a free copy of the very valuable book, How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World.

Freedom
The Secret of Long Life
Apr 07, 2008

I personally doubt, "man could live forever." I do know, while there are certainly things you can do to shorten your life, there is little you can do to lengthen it. Sure there are experts, an endless supply of them, that assure us we can lengthen our lives and know all the rules for doing it, and are actively making those rules into laws to ensure we all live longer whether we want to or not. Like all other social engineering schemes to improve lives, it's just another form of oppression that will probably shorten lives or at least make them miserable.

Fitna Speaks Loudly
Apr 02, 2008

The video in my earlier Fitna article no longer works. Though the other link still works, I'm including this link:

Character Assassins
Apr 02, 2008

In my short note, "Most Famous Individualist," I pointed out the book, Facets of Ayn Rand written by her friends Mary Ann and Charles Sures, is available online and suggested that anyone who only "knows" about Rand and her life from the works of her two character assassins, Barbara and Nathaniel Branden, should read that book to see the kind of person she really was.

The other side of this is the Brandens themselves and the kind of people they are.

CC: The Inquisition
Apr 01, 2008

You might wonder what horrible thing NASA’s Michael Griffin, head has done? He is being called “an idiot,” “surprisingly naive,” “a fool,” and worst of all accused of being “in denial.” What he did was question climate change orthodoxy, and imediately the Inquisition was on. For that he is called, “totally clueless,” and “a deep anti-global warming ideologue.” What exactly was Dr. Griffin’s “incredibly arrogant and ingorant statement,” that “indicates a complete ignorance of understanding the implications of climate change?”

Still Think You Are Free?
You and CPS
Mar 31, 2008

What would you call a country where terrorists enter the homes of totally innocent people, take their children on groundless accusations and give those children to people and institutions where they are physically, sexually, and psychologically abused, and frequently die, and commit these crimes with complete government protection and immunity from prosecution, and do this regularly in every part of that country? These child kidnappers and abusers go under the euphamistic banner of Child Protective Services, and the country where they carry out these atrocities is The United States of America.

“Fitna” and Islamic Repression of Free Speech
On the Internet
Mar 29, 2008

A London-based Web site has dropped a Dutch lawmaker's film that features disturbing images of terrorist acts juxtaposed with verses from the Quran to paint Islam as a threat to Western society, citing threats to its staff.

Good News
New Hampshire Government Ends Climate Change
Mar 20, 2008

The world's worries about global warming, or global cooling, or any other kind of global weather change people enjoy worrying about are over. New Hampshire lawmakers have solved the problem.

Still Think You Are Free?
You and the DEA
Mar 20, 2008

Since you probably have no interest in "recreational" drugs, you no doubt think the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) and WOD (War On Drugs) has nothing to do with you. Even though you might be aware the DEA is one of the most powerful and oppressive agencies in today's government, the fact that it does not directly "oppress" anything you are interested in, leads you to believe oppression can exist without affecting you. This is a very great mistake in two ways. All government oppression affects you, and in the case of the DEA, it is a very real threat to all that matters to you.

A free market of ideas for free individuals.

George Bernard Shaw said: "Liberty means responsibility. That is why most men dread it." It is true, most people are terrified of liberty, petrified they might have to be responsible for their own lives. "The Autonomist," is not for them.

If you are waiting for the government to change, or society to change, or for some program or movement to be successful to find freedom, you will never be free.

AUTONOMIST ARTICLES

Must We Suffer Global Famine Again?
Dennis Avery—May 14, 2008

Do today’s soaring food prices and Third World food riots mean we’re headed for global famine?

Big Government Responsible for Housing Bubble
Ron Paul—May 13, 2008

The House passed two bills attempting to rehabilitate the housing and mortgage market this week. There doesn't seem to be any shortage of criticism and blame for the bad decisions, and rightly so. Lenders and banks do share much of the blame for the overheated market. Lending standards were relaxed, or even abandoned altogether, creating an exaggerated pool of homebuyers that led to ballooning home prices that many, especially real estate investors, expected to continue forever. Now that the bubble has burst, the losses are staggering.

Living on the Edge of Destruction: Israel’s 60th Anniversary
Alan Caruba—May 13, 2008

“Trusting in the Rock of Israel we now place our signatures in witness to this proclamation, sitting as the Provisional State Council, on the soil of the homeland, in the city of Tel-Aviv, this day, Friday afternoon, the 5th of Iyar, 5708, the 14th of May, 1948.”

Still the Land of Fruits and Nuts
Burt Prelutsky—May 12, 2008

Because California, and Hollywood in particular, have been the punch line for so many jokes over the years, I suspect that people who don’t live out here assume we can’t possibly be that wacky. They don’t know the half of it.

Big Government Responsible for High Gas Prices
Ron Paul—May 09, 2008

In the past few months, American workers, consumers, and businesses have experienced a sudden and dramatic rise in gasoline prices. In some parts of the country, gasoline costs as much as $4 per gallon. Some politicians claim that the way to reduce gas prices is by expanding the government’s power to regulate prices and control the supply of gasoline.

Fire Mary Peters
Tom DeWeese—May 08, 2008

The Bush Administration has directly defied, not only the will and intent of Congress, but it is now openly ignoring legislation that the President himself signed into law. As a result a Constitutional crisis is rapidly developing over a project to let Mexican trucks on U.S. roads. As a result, many are now calling for the firing of U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters.

The Case Against Psychotherapy
Lawrence Stevens J.D.—May 07, 2008

The best person to talk with about your problems in life usually is a good friend. It has been said, "Therapists are expensive friends." Likewise, friends are inexpensive "therapists". Contrary to popular belief, and contrary to propaganda by mental health professionals, the training of psychiatrists, psychologists, and other mental health professionals does little or nothing to make them better equipped as counselors or "therapists".

Memorable Speech

Bernard Chapin—May 07, 2008

David Yezzi is Executive Editor of The New Criterion and a well-known poet whose published collections include The Hidden Model and Sad Is Eros.

Forecasting Hurricanes. Not!
Alan Caruba—May 06, 2008

In late April, AccuWeather.com, led by Joe Bastardi, its chief meteorologist, issued a news release that was, to be kind, pure mush. The early warning forecast for 2008’s June to November hurricane season said that conditions like La Nina and a “continued warm water cycle in the Atlantic Basin” held forth the “chance for U.S. landfalling storms.”

Viewing the 1960s from My 60s
Burt Prelutsky—May 05, 2008

Even though I’m embarrassed to have been a Democrat for so many years, I’m proud that even in my 20’s, I thought the 60’s was the worst decade in America’s history. Because I was born in 1940, I was at UCLA for some of those years and had a bird’s eye view of my fellow college students. It was not a pretty sight.

The Brain-Butchery Called Psychosurgery
Lawrence Stevens J.D.—May 05, 2008

"Psychosurgery is the surgical intervention to sever fibers connecting one part of the brain with another or to remove, destroy, or stimulate brain tissue with the intent of modifying or altering disturbances of behavior, thought content, or mood for which no organic pathological cause can be demonstrated."

Ten Simple Truths About Oil
Alan Caruba—May 02, 2008

Having written about the energy industry and issues now for a long time, I hope I can be forgiven for being enraged by the comments by Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) in response to President Bush’s press conference Tuesday morning. There is simply no way to describe them other than false.

New Jason Satellite Indicates 23-Year Global Cooling
Dennis T. Avery—May 02, 2008

Now it’s not just the sunspots that predict a 23-year global cooling. The new Jason oceanographic satellite shows that 2007 was a “cool” La Nina year—but Jason also says something more important is at work: The much larger and more persistent Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) has turned into its cool phase, telling us to expect moderately lower global temperatures until 2030 or so.

Psychiatry’s Electroconvulsive Shock Treatment
A Crime Against Humanity
Lawrence Stevens J.D.—May 01, 2008

What used to be called electroshock or electric shock treatment (EST) is now usually called "electroconvulsive therapy", often abbreviated ECT. The term is misleading, because ECT is not a form of therapy, despite the claims of its supporters. ECT causes brain damage, memory loss, and diminished intelligence.

Politicizing Pain
Ron Paul—May 01, 2008

K.K. Forss does not claim medical marijuana solves all his problems. His pain from a ruptured disc in his neck is debilitating. He is unable to go to work or to the First Baptist Church he used to attend because of the pain and muscle spasms. Taxpayers through Medicare spend over $18,000 a year on his various medications. Half of those drugs are strong narcotics. The other half address the various side-effects brought on by the first half, such as nausea, heartburn, heart palpitations, difficulty sleeping, and muscle spasms.

Psychiatric Drugs
Cure or Quackery?
Lawrence Stevens J.D.—Apr 30, 2008

Psychiatric drugs are worthless, and most of them are harmful. Many cause permanent brain damage at the doses customarily given. Psychiatric drugs and the profession that promotes them are dangers to your health.

White Guilt?
Bernard Chapin—Apr 30, 2008

During Barack Obama’s tremendously overrated “speech on race”—delivered in Philadelphia on March 18th 2008—the media-gilded candidate referred to the resentment some whites feel in regards to welfare and affirmative action. He noted that “these resentments aren't always expressed in polite company.”

From the Soviet Union to Putin’s Russia
Alan Caruba—Apr 30, 2008

When the government of the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, the fall was attributed to all kinds of reasons. There was the failed invasion of Afghanistan, the symbolic fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, and, after some desperate efforts by Mikhail Gorbechev, Communism as a guiding principle and economic system simply imploded. That’s the thumbnail version that passes for history, but Michael J. Economides and Donna Marie D’Aleo have another answer and it’s one you may not want to hear.
